“SPIRITUAL LITERATURE” IS a genre precariously poised between profundity and cliché. Sometimes, messages of love, surrender, trust, or devotion unexpectedly strike right to the heart; at other times, these messages fall flat, leaving readers feeling alienated or cynical. It’s difficult to tell what exactly distinguishes the two forms of writing. Why is it that some spiritual books resonate more than others? What’s the difference between the deep and the merely “New Age,” between genuine insight and pure psychobabble?“灵性文学”这一体裁处于深刻与陈词滥调之间,处境岌岌可危。
Though it does not explicitly aim to do so, Clare Carlisle’s Transcendence for Beginners: Life Writing and Philosophy (2026) assists us in untangling these questions, and perhaps starting to answer them. The book consists of six essays in which Carlisle, a philosopher and biographer of George Eliot and Søren Kierkegaard, explores life writing and its relationship to philosophy. The essays are adapted from her contribution to the Gifford Lectures, an annual lecture series hosted each year by a major Scottish university and devoted to “natural theology.” Past speakers have included Hannah Arendt, William James, Henri Bergson, and Iris Murdoch.
Carlisle’s book is designated “for beginners” because it is concerned primarily with the way spiritual life is initiated by an encounter with another person. It accordingly revolves around the figures that sparked insight for the author: a classmate, a professor, a yoga teacher, a hermit, the Hindu sage Ramana Maharshi, and eventually the main subjects of her academic work—Kierkegaard, George Eliot, and Baruch Spinoza. Each essay is a winding inquiry into the philosophical significance these other lives have had for Carlisle, who writes with both intense erudition and arresting vulnerability about a wide range of subjects—Spinozist metaphysics, getting high in a cave, and the kabbalistic influences on Daniel Deronda (1876), as well as her desire to understand the early death of her mother, the impulse that pushed her into philosophy.
Each of the lives Carlisle considers in Transcendence for Beginners is significant because each was in some sense revelatory for her, illuminating something larger than itself. Her catchall word for this “something larger” is “milieu,” which can mean many things—a mountain, a literary tradition, a family, an empire, a womb. The ideal biographical subject is one whose life is so bound up with its milieu that recounting its story renders vivid an entire era or environment. In her own Gifford Lectures, Hannah Arendt made a similar point when she noted that the ancient Greek term for “heroes” (andres epiphaneis) literally means “men who are fully manifest”—people who cause something to appear or come to light.
The lives that most interest Carlisle, however, are those that illuminate not just a historical milieu but also a cosmic one: lives that put us in touch with something fundamental about reality. Far from being the monopoly of politicians or artists or other standard biographical fare, this capacity to reveal can be exhibited by perfectly ordinary people: the English provincials of Middlemarch (1872), for example, or a man selling candy and water in Dharamsala, India. We encounter another person—in a book or in life—and we are suddenly seized by the real, thrust into momentary contact with the world as it is.
Carlisle seeks to understand the mystery of this kind of revelatory encounter and experiments with a number of possible frameworks that help make sense of how a person could illuminate reality in this way. One could, borrowing from John Tresch, think of the human being as a “cosmogram”—an image of the universe in miniature. Alternatively, one could follow the Advaita Vedānta philosophical tradition in regarding the self (Ātman) as perfectly identical to God (Brahman). There is also the Christian idea that God is incarnated in Jesus Christ, through whom He is revealed.
Carlisle’s preferred framework, however, comes from Spinoza, whom she identifies as her “guide” for the lectures. Spinoza saw human beings as dependent for their existence on a single unique substance, “God or Nature” (Deus sive Natura), which makes up the totality of what there is. Humans are expressions or modes of that substance, meaning that all human lives manifest—but are not identical to—the divine. While all humans are, in this sense, “incarnations” of God, people differ in the extent to which they are cognizant of this relationship. Spinoza’s theologically radical conclusion was that Christ was not exceptional in kind but only in degree: he was maximally aware of himself as a mode of God or Nature but was not for that reason a totally different species of being—not an ontological unicorn.
These philosophical models may give us some way of understanding how the self is related to the divine—through relationships of representation, identity, or expression—but they are less useful in helping us to articulate what exactly about God or reality is revealed by an exceptional human life. In the early 20th century, many visitors to the South Indian sage Ramana Maharshi were struck by the extraordinarily still and compassionate quality of his presence but could only gesture at what it revealed. His teaching, transmitted via “communicative silences” and “simple being,” imparted a kind of knowledge to be felt and not stated. Eventually, this knowledge found its way to Carlisle by means of a number of unlikely routes: as a teenager, she devoured W. Somerset Maugham’s The Razor’s Edge (1944), which was inspired by an encounter with Ramana, and later in life she became a student of a meditation teacher, Russel Williams, who experienced a spiritual awakening when Ramana’s face inexplicably appeared to him in a moment of despair.
Ramana’s example demonstrates that some knowledge can only be imparted by presence, or what Carlisle calls “kalon,” a Greek word that roughly translates as “beauty” or “nobility” but is perhaps better understood as a kind of “enigmatic good”: a mysterious “depth and density” that shines forth from a human life. The biographer’s task is to write about her subjects in such a way as to reproduce their kalon. But since kalon is an ineffable quality, it would seem that the biographer can only convey it by letting the details of their subject’s life speak for themselves. Philosophical speculation is best left out.
This, at least, is the view propounded by the Italian feminist philosopher Adriana Cavarero, whom Carlisle cites as arguing that life writing “examines the unique singularity of a life” and is thus “insurgent against philosophy.” Whereas the philosopher asks questions like “What is man?” the biographer asks, “Who is this man? or, Who is this woman?” Philosophy craves generality, while life writing “reveals the finite in its fragile uniqueness, and sings its glory.”
Carlisle largely agrees with Cavarero’s understanding of life writing but takes issue with her conception of philosophy, arguing that attending to the philosophical potential of biography “might even stretch our ideas about what philosophy is and how it should be done.” Rather than conceiving of philosophy as an enterprise concerned with grandly general questions like “What is man?,” she suggests that we adopt Ludwig Wittgenstein’s view that philosophy’s task is more modest: “to look rather than think; to describe rather than explain; to ‘see connections.’” Seen in this light, philosophy is really not so far from biography: both resist the urge to generalize and explain, contenting themselves with simply describing the particularities of life.
Is this the conception of philosophy at work in Transcendence for Beginners? Carlisle can hardly be said to shy away from generality, frequently invoking Spinozist and Indian sources that are guilty of exactly the kind of grand metaphysical explanation that Wittgenstein objected to. Some human lives, it seems, can deliver articulable philosophical insights about reality: Ramana’s life illuminates the Vedantic philosophy of nondual monism in which he was steeped; Spinoza’s similarly renders vivid the terse prose of his Ethics (1677).
So what role does this kind of philosophical speculation play in life writing? Does it obscure or clarify the biographical subject’s kalon? There is no immediately forthcoming answer in Transcendence for Beginners, a book torn between two opposing urges—the desire to arrive at general conclusions about God and reality, and the impulse to “sing the glory” of life’s particularities. The reader is accordingly left with the impression that the relationship between life writing and philosophy is at least as ambivalent as it is productive.
One of the risks of drawing philosophical conclusions from a life story is cliché: if the biographer tries to summarize the kalon of her subject’s life, she may be left with empty, rehearsed generalities that fail to convey adequately that life’s enigmatic beauty, the “depth and density” that is best left to shine in the details. Carlisle evinces an awareness of this risk when she confesses to a “fear of naivety” and “dread of being a cliché,” possibilities that inevitably lurk in the background of any discussion of spirituality, a subject that Wittgenstein and Ramana suggest is perhaps more eloquently conveyed by silence.
Carlisle’s book is propelled by unresolved tensions between philosophy and life writing, generality and particularity, speech and silence. Tensions notwithstanding, what emerges from Transcendence for Beginners is a theory of spiritual life writing that helps explain why the genre is both uniquely positioned to convey theological truths and singularly vulnerable to cliché. Life writing is a theologically privileged genre insofar as it captures its subject’s kalon—their enigmatic beauty and capacity to reveal something fundamental and inarticulable about reality and the divine. At the same time, spiritual biography is forced to negotiate between the particularities of a person’s life and the philosophical conclusions that seem to follow from that life, conclusions that risk becoming platitudes if improperly conveyed. Carlisle’s book admirably demonstrates, however, that fear of cliché shouldn’t stop us from talking about spirituality, for such talk may occasionally allow us to transcend. 生活写作在捕捉对象 kalon(即其神秘的美以及揭示现实与神性中某种根本且不可言说之物的能力)方面,是一种具有神学特权的体裁。
